Green compost is used to improve soil structure, organic matter content and long-term soil health within landscaping and construction applications. Our focus is on materials that are reliable, responsibly processed and suitable for consistent use.
We recognise that green compost is derived from managed organic waste streams and, when handled appropriately, can form part of a circular approach to material use.

When sourcing green compost, we apply the same values set out in our Responsible Sourcing Framework, with particular emphasis on:

Standards and Controls
While certification alone does not define suitability, we expect compost suppliers to operate within recognised controls appropriate to the material, which may include:
PAS 100 – Specification for composted materials, covering feedstock control, processing and quality assurance
Environmental permits or exemptions – Compliance with Environment Agency requirements for composting operations
Quality monitoring procedures – Routine sampling, testing and record keeping
Traceability measures – Ability to demonstrate material origin and processing routes
Environmental Considerations
Our approach to environmental performance for green compost is evidence-led and proportionate:
Recognition of organic matter contribution and potential carbon storage benefits
Clear separation between soil improvement, carbon storage and full lifecycle impact
Use of transparent calculation methods where carbon content or storage is referenced
Avoidance of exaggerated or unsupported environmental claims
Where carbon storage is referenced, it is presented with defined scope and limitations, consistent with recognised methodologies.
Ongoing Review and Improvement
Green compost sourcing is reviewed periodically to ensure continued alignment with our values and expectations. We look for suppliers who are open to:
Continuous improvement in processing and quality control
Engagement on data quality and transparency
Constructive dialogue around evolving standards and best practice

We do not expect green compost to be impact-free, and we do not present it as such. Our position is grounded in responsible use, honest communication and alignment with suppliers who share our approach.
