Role of Topsoil
Topsoil forms the foundation of most planted landscapes. Its structure, organic content and consistency directly influence drainage, nutrient availability, rooting depth and long-term performance.
Our focus is on topsoil that is suitable for its intended use, consistent in composition, and handled in a way that protects its structure and biological function.
How Our Core Values Apply
When sourcing topsoil, we apply the same core values that underpin our wider framework:
Responsibility – Considering how topsoil is stripped, stored, processed and transported.
Transparency – Understanding soil origin, blending methods and constituent materials.
Consistency – Supplying topsoil that performs reliably for specification and repeat use.
Longevity – Prioritising soil function and resilience over short-term appearance.
Honesty – Being clear about suitability, limitations and intended application.
Our Core Standards and Controls
Topsoil is assessed and sourced in line with recognised guidance and good practice. Where applicable, this may include compliance with British Standard BS 3882 for topsoil, covering texture, organic matter content and contaminant limits.
Additional controls may include screening, blending, visual inspection and basic laboratory testing, depending on the application and specification requirements.
Environmental Considerations
Topsoil is a finite resource. Responsible sourcing focuses on minimising unnecessary movement, avoiding degradation through poor handling, and using soils appropriately rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Where carbon content is referenced, this relates to organic matter present within the soil at the point of use, not permanent carbon sequestration or offsetting.
Ongoing Review and Improvements
Our approach to sourcing topsoil is kept under review. We continue to assess suppliers, handling methods and specifications to improve consistency, reduce waste and respond to evolving standards.
Position Statement
We recognise that no two soils are identical and that topsoil performance depends on context, use and management. Our position is to source topsoil responsibly, apply it appropriately, and communicate clearly about its role within a healthy landscape.
